The Golden Afternoon Exhibition
The Golden Afternoon is an immersive installation involving mixed-media visual art
pieces, dance and evocative sound design. A safe haven is created to experience of
a utopic sense of embodiment and a return to childlike wonder. Drawing reference
from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Grace evokes ‘a world of her
own’ in which all beings, are free, safe, and unbound. Through extrapolating
memories from her childhood, she positions the personal as political and alludes to
totalitarian forces that condition us to live in systems and patterns shaped by fear
and smallness. The Golden Afternoon takes the viewers on a journey into this ‘world’
where shame is eradicated through radical love and we remember that the place of
safety, curiosity, possibility; Wonderland, is within us. It is a reclamation of childlike
wonder and silliness as a tool to experience joy and resist harmful forces that
attempt to render us subservient.
